A Man’s Guide to the Winter Coat

Each year the winter months remind us of one thing, it’s freezing outside! Well, maybe a few other things as well like family and the holidays, but the second you step outside in the cold that’s the only thing on your mind.  Unless you have the luxury of hibernating all winter, you’re going to need a good coat that can protect you from the elements.  The problem is you never know which element you are going to face on a given day.  In order to be fully prepared, as well as fashionable in any situation, you are going to need a few coat choices in your closet.  Here is a list of some of the brutal elements you will be facing off with this winter and what type of coat will be your best ally in the fight.

Snow: One of the greatest things about winter can also be one of your worst nightmares if ill prepared.  With the arrival of snow comes snowball fights, trips to the mountain, and a great excuse to stay inside by the fire; however, it also brings us some of the roughest and coldest commutes we will face all year.  Not just any coat can help you battle the cold snow, if you want to stay warm this winter you are going to need a heavy duty coat that can keep you warm and dry.  Look for a coat with a thick insulation interior.  This type of jacket will help keep you warm no matter how heavy the snowfall.

Rain: There is nothing worse than arriving to work, a meeting, or a party soaking wet because your coat couldn’t handle the torrential downfall.  I personally would prefer freezing cold over wet any day of the week, especially when I’m dressed up and trying to impress a client, boss, or date.  Unless you want to pack an extra pair of clothes every wear you go, you better get yourself a coat that can keep you dry no matter how bad the rain gets.   If it’s raining, that often means it isn’t as cold out as a snow day.  This means that your best bet will be to wear a coat that is 100% waterproof yet light enough so you don’t overheat.  If it is a bit colder, you can always where additional layers underneath which can be easily removed if you get too hot.  I recommend a jacket that will protect you from the wet and is fully adjustable around the writs, waist, and hood for optimum protection.

Wind: As if the snow and rain weren’t enough, another element we face every winter is the wind.  On an ideal day the worst wind you will face will be soft and unnoticeable; however, on the worst days you won’t know which way is up as leaves, snow, and stray animals fly by you.  The worst part about wind is that it can sneak into even the smallest of holes on your coat.  This includes your sleeves, your hood, and your waist.  To best fight the wind, you will need a coat that is well insulated and that can minimize these various entry points.  A puffer jacket is one of my favorite jackets to wear on a windy day. This type of jacket is well-insulated and will protect you from the wind while keeping you warm.

Dry, but Cold: Not all days will be filled with snow, rain, and wind.  Although these deceptively nice days are most often the best we can hope for, they can fool you into thinking you can leave your coat at home for a sweater.  But by now we have learned that a slightly cold day in the morning can turn freezing by mid day.  When it’s dry you won’t need a coat with a hood to protect you from rain or snow.  This gives you a wider range of styles to choose from that are often more fashionable than their hooded counterparts.  I recommend going with a nice Peacoat that gives you a traditional and classy look.  Peacoats come in a wide variety of colors, styles, and sizes, giving you the freedom to find the right fit for your personal style.  The properly fitted Peacoat will be snug around your torso and crease slightly when you bend your arms.  If you are looking for something a little different than the norm, look for a sheepskin jacket.  These jackets are very stylish and are not as common as a Peacoat.  Furthermore, they are lined with warm insulation that will help keep you warm without looking too bulky.

Whatever the weather you need to make certain you have a coat that fits the conditions. If you are now motivated to make a purchase, stop by one of our favorite outlet centers. They have a great selection of coats at a price that won’t get  you soaked!

Our Favorite Finds. A Day at the Outlets.

Who doesn’t love that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you see kids on Santa’s lap, or people reuniting with loved ones over the holiday season? Well, now you can get the clothes to keep you feeling warm and fuzzy on the outside too!

As I pranced around the mall, visions of fur-lined gloves and patterned sweaters filled my head. It seemed like everything was about the layers and mix-and-match this season. One of my favorite finds was at Eddie Bauer – scarves for 40% off and you can throw them over any top to instantly make it look Christmas-y.

It’s important to keep the toes warm, too. Clarks Bostonian had these men’s slippers 30% in the exact style my dad is looking for. I made a mental note to come back and grab them. And for the girls, buy one, get one 50% off Ugg style boots from Pac Sun – it’s like two presents in one!

While I was out, I picked up a pair of earmuffs from American Eagle Outfitters at 25% off. But these aren’t just earmuffs, they double as headphones with tiny speakers tucked inside, so they’re perfect for working outdoors and one of my favorite things they carry right now.

Last, my instant go-to favorite is the MAC makeup line at the Cosmetic Store. They’re 20-30% cheaper than full-price MAC stores and in these winter hues, you can get that warm glow even in the coldest of temperatures.

And who doesn’t love these fuzzy creatures? Toys R Us carries Pillow Pets for $19.99 and they are too cute to pass up. They make me want to snuggle up for a long winter’s nap. Plus, with better than outlet prices you can rest easy knowing that you got the best deals and the warmest styles to get you through the holiday season.

The Outlet Gals Holiday “Road Trip” Survival Tips.

If you’re traveling this holiday season, like many of your favorite Outlet Gals (and Marc) bloggers will be doing over the next few weeks, we suggest that you plan ahead. We took a quick poll with our team and it was determined that 88% of us will be traveling by car to visit family and friends this holiday season. If you’re like us, then we’ve created some great tips for you.

  1. When travelling by vehicle, know where you are going and how to get there and back.
  2. Obtain a map or download the latest available GPS data.
  3. Check for construction detours and for longer trips, get a weather forecast.
  4. If your travels take you out-of-state, most states and/or state law enforcement agencies provide road-and-highway information either online or at a 1-800. Check to see what conditions they report before leaving.
  5.  Inform a family member where you will be and when to expect you back. Give them your route if they don’t know it.
  6. Travel and conduct your business during daylight hours if possible.
  7. Have access to your cell phone – but remember, don’t text while driving. In most states this is illegal.
  8. If possible, know the emergency cell phone codes for the area you are in. For example, in Colorado remember that *CSP# is Colorado State Patrol.
  9. When driving, keep doors locked and windows rolled up at all times. Maintain at least half a tank of fuel and keep your vehicle in good repair. Before leaving for your holiday “road trip” you should have your vehicle serviced and check out sufficiently far ahead to allow for repairs if needed.

How to Set the Table. For the Holidays and Beyond.

My mom told me, my little sister and brother that we are going to be responsible for setting the Thanksgiving table for our family this year. This can be a bit overwhelming since my mother likes to go all out.

After she announced this news to us I thought my little brother was going to cry (he does that all the time) but my mom gave us each this diagram that shows us just how to set a table (not that I don’t know how to do that, come on I’m 14) but because this meal is bigger than most we are adding a few additional touches.

I thought there might be other kids being asked to do the same thing we’re doing so I thought I’d share this diagram with you.

Good luck and let me know how it goes on your end.

How to Tie a Tie?

We’ve all been there before, standing in front of the mirror with tie in hand and not a clue on how to tie it.  Even worse, we usually find ourselves in this position when we have only five minutes until we need to be out the door and on our way.  For those of you who don’t have a personal tie tying assistant on hand (they’re all the rage these days), the best way to learn is through a simple step-by-step guide.  The good news is that once you’ve walked through these steps a few times, you’ll never forget it, kind of like riding a bike but not nearly as fun.

Since clip-on ties don’t seem to pack much of a professional punch after your third grade graduation, I thought I would go over the basics on how to tie a tie.  I will be walking you step-by-step through the four-in-hand knot, the most common and popular of necktie knots.  Once you get this down, you can move onto more advanced knots and start utilizing the best knots for certain suits and situations.  But before we get ahead of ourselves and begin the lifelong journey of Zen neck tying, let’s start with the basics:

The accompanying images are what you would see when looking in the mirror.

Step 1: Take the tie and place it around your collar with the wide end on your right hand side.

Step 2: Cross the wide end of the tie over the narrow end and then back around underneath to its original position on the right hand side.

Step 3: Cross the wide end back over the front if the narrow end of the tie.

Step 4: Pass the wide end up through the loop that has formed around your collar.

Step 5: With the now-formed knot loosely held in hand, pass the wide end of the tie through the knot and down towards your waist.

Step 6: tighten the tie by holding the narrow end of the tie with your left hand and pulling the knot up towards your collar with your right.

Look at you, looks perfect…well maybe not.  The first few times you try it the knot won’t turn out quite right.   No worries, after a few trial runs you will have a perfect knot in no time.  **NOTE**  Be sure to untie your tie at the end of each day to avoid damage.

Sunscreen in the Winter. A Beauty Must.

Just because the temperatures have dipped doesn’t mean that the sun doesn’t shine. Sunscreen is more than a beauty “must” – it is a health necessity!  According to the Skin Cancer Foundation (www.skincancer.org) “Adults who use sunscreen daily can drastically reduce their risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, according to new landmark research from Australia.”  So, when the sun is shining brightly over a snow-covered landscape, remember that sunlight is reflecting back at you.    Lotions & Creams with SPF (Sun Protective Factor, which measures defense against the sun’s UVB rays) can help reduce your exposure and protect your skin all year round.

Women:

  1.  Use a moisturizer with an SPF on your face.  Special eye creams with SPF are more sensitive and highly effective.  Apply this after washing your face in the morning, before applying make-up.
  2. Many make-ups now contain SPF!  Foundations, blushes, and lip glosses can help protect your face, and make you look beautiful.
  3. Don’t forget your neck, décolletage, and hands!  These areas are more exposed than you realize.  Your hands take a beating from the sun while driving, so keep a tube of SPF hand lotion in your car to protect and soothe that dry skin from the cold weather!

Men:

  1. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, perhaps the rising rate of skin cancer in men is having one positive effect:  More men are paying attention to what’s happening on their face.
  2. So, take your time shaving!  Prepare your skin using shower steam or a hot wet washcloth to soften the hair.  Lather up before, and moisturize after with an SPF after-shaving lotion.   Use 15 SPF or higher, which will protect your face and soothe your skin.
  3. Working outdoors, shoveling snow, and winter sports mean your skin needs extra protection.  Wear a hat to protect your head & face from that strong winter sun.  Sunglasses in the winter help protect your skin, eyes, and keep that snow glare down too.  SPF wears off, so keep a tube or bottle of SPF 15 or higher in your car to reapply throughout the day.

Happy Halloween from the Outlet Gals (and Marc).

Today is Halloween. We hope you have some scary fun on this frightful holiday. As we adorn our costumes in preparations for festivities later today we got to thinking about the holiday and where/when did the word “Halloween” come from and when did all the traditions that we see today start.

Here’s what we found out (from our friends over at Wikipedia). The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even (“evening”), that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (mass-day of all saints), All-Hallows-Even itself not attested until 1556.

The carving of jack-o’-lanterns springs from the souling custom of carving turnips into lanterns as a way of remembering the souls held in purgatory. The turnip has traditionally been used in Ireland and Scotland at Halloween, but immigrants to North America used the native pumpkin, which are both readily available and much larger – making them easier to carve than turnips. The American tradition of carving pumpkins is recorded in 1837 and was originally associated with harvest time in general, not becoming specifically associated with Halloween until the mid-to-late 19th century.

The imagery of Halloween is derived from many sources, including national customs, works of Gothic and horror literature (such as the novels Frankenstein and Dracula), and classic horror films (such as Frankenstein and The Mummy). Among the earliest works on the subject of Halloween is from Scottish poet John Mayne in 1780 whom made note of pranks at Halloween, as well as the supernatural associated with the night, “Bogies” (ghosts), influencing Robert Burns’ Halloween 1785.

The history of Halloween has a long past so no matter how you celebrate this haunted little holiday tonight be safe while you are out and have fun.

Halloween is going to the Dogs: Why do we dress up our animals?

Mom and I went to buy George, our dog, something to wear for Halloween. Yes, I said Halloween. Every year since George was a puppy we’d find something cute for him to wear while mom and dad handed out candy to the local neighbor kids. Last year, George was Jack Sparrow, the year before he was a bumble bee and the year before that a frog. This will be our fifth year and we love (George does too I swear). We’ll be out this week in search of the perfect Halloween outfit and plan on stopping by our favorite Outlet Center. They have a terrific pet store that has costumes at a great price.

Will you dress your dog up for Halloween? If so, you can post your pet’s photo on our Facebook pages: Cabazon Outlets, Citadel Outlets, Outlets at Castle Rock, Lake Elsinore Outlets, Outlets at Anthem, Outlets at Conroe, Outlets of Colorado, Outlets at Hillsboro, Outlets at Silverthorne, Outlets at Loveland, Outlets at Vicksburg, or Woodburn Company Stores.

Enjoy Halloween and be safe.
